Our illegal IUI

While talking with our new RE last week, we decided to move forward with another IUI. He was flipping through our records and asked DH if he had gotten the HIV/STD bloodwork panel prior to IUI #1. He didn't see it in there, but said that it is required by law in our state before an insemination.

We thought and hesitated. I remembered the old RE's office giving us a lab slip for that at our first appointment in April....along with a lot of other forms and documents. I also remember that they mentioned it was a legal requirement. But then I had the fibroid and had surgery, so by the time we actually decided to do an IUI we completely forgot about it.

DH never did that bloodwork, and the RE's office never asked for it. Oops. I guess if I had gotten pregnant it would have been an illegal baby!

I also wonder if now we got the old RE in trouble. Maybe the new RE will turn him in for doing an insemination without that bloodwork. Double oops.

(Although I really doubt the new RE will care enough to take the time to actually 'turn him in.' But he did seem rather shocked!)

Uh oh...you would have had to dress the baby in striped sleepers :)

Wow! That's really crazy. But at least you can get it taken care of now...

Oops! Oh well. We once had an IUI converted to timed intercourse because Aaron's labwork had expired.

Our state has the same law. I was shocked when our doctor said we both had to have HIV tests. It sounded so scary.

Hope you are doing well. :-D

Wow, how clandestine of you all. Sometimes it's funny how inane all of these details are and how the people running the show don't even follow the rules - but then sometimes it's scary that they can't even keep to the protocol (what does that say about how they're handling the finer points of your care?). In any case, I hope everything gets worked out w/ out any trips to the courthouse.

Our nurse was in a panic before our last IVF b/c she couldn't find dh's labwork from the previous IVF. She said she could go to "DEA Jail" - fortunately we hunted it down! :)

my clinic required that too, i don't know if it was a legal requirement. :)

Interesting! We didn't do any of that testing at all, until we hit IVF.

Oh well, at least once you get it, its results should be good for a year if not longer!!

OOOPS!! it is so funny that what seems like the littlest thing becomes such a big deal. there have been so many times that i have forgotten that one minor detail that later turned into the biggest issue. good to know that the next time it will all be legal!
